View full detailsSilicone-based lubricant is the longest-lasting type: it doesn’t dry out, is water-resistant, and is ideal for use in the shower or bath. Here you’ll find silicone lubricants from pjur, Eros Bodyglide, and Swiss Navy—ranging from light formulas to thick silicone creams. Silicone lubricant is safe with all types of condoms but not suitable for silicone toys. Not sure about your toy’s material? Then opt for water-based lubricant. Also check out the hybrid lubricant for a combination of both base types.
What is silicone-based lubricant?
Silicone-based lubricant — also known as silicone lube — is a lubricant that uses dimethicone or cyclomethicone as its main ingredient. These are synthetic silicone compounds that are extremely slippery, do not dry out, and are water-resistant. Silicone-based lubricant remains active until it is deliberately washed off with soap and water—water alone does not rinse it away. It is safe with latex condoms but not suitable for silicone toys: the silicone compounds in the lubricant can damage the silicone of the toy. Popular brands: pjur Original, Eros Bodyglide, Swiss Navy Silicone.
Why choose silicone-based lubricant?
Silicone-based lubricant is the choice for long-lasting sessions and for use in water. It doesn’t dry out, doesn’t need to be reapplied, and provides constant lubrication throughout the entire session. It doesn’t lose its effectiveness in the shower or bath—water-based lubricant washes away immediately. Silicone lubricant is also popular with people who have sensitive or dry skin because it forms a protective layer on the skin. The silky-smooth feel after use is an added bonus.
Types and Varieties
Light silicone lubricant
A thin, fluid silicone formula for a light and smooth feel. Spreads easily over large areas. Popular for massage and vaginal sex. Brands: pjur Original, Eros Silk.
Thick silicone lubricant
Thicker silicone cream or gel for extra coverage and long-lasting lubrication. Popular for anal use and when using larger toys. Stays in place better than thin formulas. Brands: Eros Bodyglide Classic, Swiss Navy Premium Silicone.
Silicone lube for anal
Specifically thicker silicone formulas for anal use. Long-lasting and water-resistant. Not suitable for silicone anal toys—use water-based or hybrid instead. Also check out the anal lube collection.
What should you look for when buying?
The main limitation of silicone-based lubricants is their incompatibility with silicone toys. If in doubt, test it: apply a drop of lubricant to an inconspicuous part of the toy and wait 10 minutes — if the material becomes sticky or dull, do not use a silicone-based lubricant with that toy. Silicone-based lube is harder to wash off than water-based lube—use soap and warm water. Avoid contact with clothing and bedding because silicone stains are difficult to remove.
Frequently Asked Questions About Silicone Lubricant
Is silicone lubricant safe to use with condoms?
Yes. Silicone-based lubricant is safe to use with latex, polyisoprene, and polyurethane condoms. It does not damage any of these materials. It is only unsafe when used with silicone toys.
Why shouldn’t I use silicone lubricant with silicone toys?
The dimethicone compounds in silicone-based lubricant partially dissolve the silicone in the toy. This damages the surface: the toy becomes sticky, porous, or warped. Porous surfaces are difficult to clean and can harbor bacteria. Always use water-based or hybrid lubricant with silicone toys.
How do you wash off silicone-based lube?
With soap and warm water. Water alone isn’t enough—silicone is water-repellent. Use a mild soap and rub it in well before rinsing. On bedding, a grease-cutting detergent works best for silicone stains.
Can I use silicone lube in the shower?
Yes, that’s actually one of the biggest advantages of silicone-based lube. It doesn’t wash away with water and retains its lubricating properties completely in the shower or bath. Be careful of slippery floors, though—silicone lube on the shower floor is slippery and increases the risk of slipping.
